Deviated Septum Treatment in New England

Expert Diagnosis and Personalized Treatment Plans

Here at New England Breathe Free, we have a team of experts with years of extensive experience in diagnosing and treating deviated septum. A deviated septum is a common condition that affects breathing, sleep, and overall sinus health. However, it is often overlooked.

If you’re dealing with persistent nasal congestion, frequent sinus infections, or breathing difficulties, a deviated septum may be the root cause after all. We offer evidence-based and personalized care plans designed to address nasal obstruction, improve airflow, and support your overall quality of life.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

In the middle of the nose is a thin wall of bone and cartilage that divides the nasal cavity into right and left sides. This wall is known as the nasal septum. In some cases, this thin wall is displaced off-center, resulting in what is known as a deviated septum. This is a structural issue that results in restricted airflow, nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing through the nose, and increased risk of sinus complications.

A deviated septum may be congenital or may result from injury, trauma, or be a part of natural aging.

The Common Symptoms of a Deviated Septum

Common signs of a deviated septum include:

  • Nasal obstruction or congestion in one or both nostrils
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Frequent or recurrent sinus infections
  • Postnasal drip
  • Facial pain and pressure
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep

If your symptoms persist, become chronic, or intensify, a medical evaluation is highly recommended.

How Is a Deviated Septum Diagnosed?

Our ENT specialists at New England Breathe Free can diagnose a deviated septum using nasal endoscopy and other diagnostic tools to examine the patient’s nasal anatomy and assess nasal airflow. Our diagnostic process includes:

  • A detailed review of your symptoms, their severity, and your medical history
  • In-office nasal evaluation, typically using minimally invasive tools
  • An assessment of your sinus function and a review of several lifestyle factors

Deviated Septum Treatment Options: Medication vs. Surgery

The appropriate treatment option for a deviated septum will depend on the severity of the deviation and the symptoms. Options include both surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Non-Surgical Treatment Option: Medications

For milder cases and symptoms, medications may offer effective symptom relief:

  • Decongestants reduce sinus swelling
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays reduce inflammation
  • Saline irrigation clears mucus buildup

These treatment options will help with symptom control; however, it does not address the underlying anatomical issue causing the symptoms.

Surgical Treatment Option: Septoplasty

If standard medications don’t improve your symptoms, septoplasty may be recommended instead. This doesn’t just address the symptoms–it addresses the root cause by repositioning the septum to improve breathing and airflow.

What to expect during septoplasty surgery:

  • Typically performed under local or general anesthesia
  • It takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes as an outpatient procedure
  • There are only internal incisions, which means there is no visible scarring
  • Temporary side effects may include nasal swelling, congestion, and mild discomfort
  • Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days

While outcomes vary, many patients experience improved airflow and sinus function following full recovery. Individual results depend on a variety of health and anatomical factors.
