Sinus Infection Treatments in New England

A sinus infection (sinusitis) is more than just a bad cold—it can cause facial pain, congestion, fatigue, and pressure that interferes with your daily life. While some sinus infections clear on their own, recurring or long-lasting infections may benefit from professional evaluation and treatment to help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

At New England Breathe Free, we focus on understanding the cause of your symptoms and providing treatment options that go beyond short-term relief. Results vary by individual.

Understanding Sinus Infections

Your sinuses are hollow spaces that help filter and humidify the air you breathe. When they become inflamed or blocked—often due to allergies, colds, or structural issues—mucus can’t drain properly. This creates an environment where bacteria or viruses may grow, leading to infection.

Common symptoms include:

  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Stuffy or blocked nose
  • Thick nasal discharge (yellow or green)
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Fatigue or feeling “run down”

Acute vs. Chronic Sinusitis

  • Acute sinusitis: Lasts less than four weeks, often triggered by a cold or seasonal allergies.
  • Chronic sinusitis: Lasts 12 weeks or more, or returns several times a year. Often linked to ongoing inflammation, nasal polyps, or structural blockages.

If your symptoms persist or frequently come back, additional evaluation may be helpful to determine appropriate treatment options.

How We Treat Sinus Infections

We take a step-by-step approach, beginning with the least invasive methods and considering advanced care when needed.

Medical Management
  • Prescription nasal sprays to reduce swelling and inflammation
  • Saline rinses to flush out mucus and allergens
  • Short courses of antibiotics when a bacterial infection is suspected
  • Allergy medications for sinusitis related to environmental triggers
In-Office Evaluation

If sinus problems continue to recur, we may recommend a nasal endoscopy or imaging study to better understand what’s causing the blockage or inflammation. This helps us create a care plan tailored to your individual needs.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

For patients with chronic sinusitis, advanced, minimally invasive procedures—such as balloon sinuplasty—may be considered. These procedures are designed to open blocked sinus passages and may improve drainage in some patients.

Not all patients are candidates for in-office procedures. Individual outcomes vary.

When to Consider Seeing a Specialist

You may want to consult with a qualified ENT specialist if you:

  • Experience symptoms lasting longer than 10 days without improvement
  • Have multiple sinus infections in a year
  • Deal with ongoing congestion or facial pressure that doesn’t go away
  • Develop fever, swelling around the eyes, or severe headaches with sinus symptoms
