Septoplasty Surgery in New England

A Surgical Option to Help Relieve Nasal Obstruction

Persistent nasal obstruction and breathing difficulties can significantly impact daily life and overall quality of life. In some cases, a deviated septum may be a contributing factor.

At New England Breathe Free, we understand how challenging this can be. Our board-certified ENT specialists provide thorough evaluations and may recommend septoplasty—a surgical procedure that addresses structural issues in the nasal septum to support improved airflow and help reduce related sinus complications.

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an outpatient procedure that corrects a deviated septum. A deviated septum occurs when the wall of bone and cartilage between the nostrils is misaligned, which can obstruct airflow and cause persistent nasal congestion or breathing difficulties. It may also contribute to frequent sinus infections, nosebleeds, snoring, or poor sleep quality.

During the procedure, the doctor repositions the nasal septum to improve alignment. This can enhance airflow and may improve breathing. Results vary from patient to patient, and not all symptoms resolve fully after surgery.

When to Consider Septoplasty

A consultation with an ENT specialist can help determine whether septoplasty may be appropriate. It may be considered if you experience:

  • Chronic nasal congestion that doesn’t respond to standard medications
  • Frequent sinus infections or postnasal drip
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Recurring nosebleeds or nasal discomfort

Sleep disturbances, such as snoring—and in some anatomical cases, mild OSA related to nasal obstruction—may be evaluated as part of your consultation.

What Is Recovery and Healing Like?

Septoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing recovery at home. Your care provider will explain post-procedure instructions in detail. Recovery may involve:

  • Follow-up appointments to monitor healing
  • Temporary swelling, congestion, or discomfort in the nasal area
  • Pain medication if needed
  • Possible use of nasal packing
  • Avoiding strenuous activity for a period of time as directed

Healing times differ, but many patients begin to notice improvement within several weeks.

Risks and Considerations

Septoplasty is generally considered safe, but as with any surgery, risks are possible. These may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Persistent nasal obstruction
  • Changes in the shape of the nose
  • Need for revision surgery (rare)

Your provider will discuss potential risks and benefits during your consultation to help you make an informed decision.
